The Order of Malta has a charism of serving the sick and the poor. Not only the sick and the poor, but the vulnerable as well. Recently, the Order of Malta’s L.A. Location hosted a charity drive in service of their local homeless community.

Knights and Dames of the Order gave out jackets and backpacks, alongside hygiene kits, hand sanitizer and groceries. With the weather getting colder, the brand new jackets were extremely necessary to the homeless there. Free flu shots were also available, something which otherwise most people in this community would not have had access to.

In addition to us handing out these items, Knights and Dames of the Order made sure that the homeless also received sandwiches, coffee, and pastries. “Delicious! Thanks to the Order of Malta, I’m drinking a hot cup of coffee right now. It’s awesome,” said one of the Order’s homeless guests.

The purpose of this charity drive wasn’t just to provide practical items, it was to provide the homeless with a sense of dignity, comfort and hope. Because, all of us regardless of circumstance deserve to be cared for as God’s children. The Order of Malta hopes that by extending its charism through this charity drive, the homeless in L.A. felt God’s love for them.
