Membership

The following is the process to become a Member of the Order of Malta:

  1. A candidate must be invited to become a member, as each prospective member is sponsored by an invested member.
  2. The sponsor mentors the candidate throughout the year of preparation and vocation discernment preceding his or her investiture into the Order.
  3. After the mentorship period, the candidate is approved by the Western Association Membership Committee and the Executive Committee and is formally proposed by the President to the Grand Master.
  4. Final approval comes from the Grand Master with the deliberative vote of the Sovereign Council in Rome.

What is Required of a Member?

  1. A commitment for life to glorify God and to serve the poor and the sick in community with other members of the Order.
  2. Service to the sick and the poor in union with the local community or the Order.

The Ideal Candidate

  1. A lay person in good standing with the Catholic Church
  2. A person residing in the United States
  3. A person fully committed to charitable works in service of the poor and the sick
  4. A person who fully embraces the Church’s moral and spiritual teachings
