In 1982 a small group of Catholic Worker volunteers distributed 65 egg salad sandwiches from the trunk of their car on Soledad Street in Salinas. Since that start Dorothy’s Place has grown serving three meals a day to over 200 people in the homeless community in the Chinatown area of Salinas. It has expanded to include a free health clinic for the poor, a walk-in emergency shelter for street women in Salinas, and created a successful community of formerly broken and abandoned lives now living together in mutual support in the House of Peace.

The Monterey Area continues this work on the first Saturday of every other month by preparing  delicious “to go” hot meals and  plentiful bagged lunches with all the extras to the Chinatown Homeless encampment.
